Education Advisory Board Liaison - Betty Shelley
February 21, 2008
Report

The EAB monthly meeting was held on Thursday the 21st. At first it appeared it would once again be a meeting with not enough members for a quorum but as the meeting continued, there were 9 members present. Dr Hays was acting chair as there has been no word on the condition of Dr. McCoy. She however has missed a sufficient number of meetings to be disqualified. Lu Deaner is once again on the Board having been appointed by Commissioner Hutchinson.  The first order of business was to get the minutes of several meetings approved as well as the Agenda for the evening.  School Board Chair Robin Bartleman was present & gave a very interesting talk on the problems with the Budget of the School Board & the restrictions placed on the Board by The State. The amount of funds which will be cut will seriously hurt the County schools.  A school the EAB has been working with, Sunland, has lost their Principal. He was very motivated & was working well with all. This is a set back. Chair Bartleman is quite anxious to get her message across & says she will come again although there are 37 cities in the County which she tries to visit. Her message though depressing showed what the Board is trying to do.    An election was held & Dr. Hays was elected Chair for she does such a good job already. Board member Phaedre Xanthos was elected Co Chair.

We also heard from Charles Webster, the Liaison from BCPS. He advised us of the notable programs being sponsored by that Group. We did have a new member,Laura Clark who actually is from my Board & is a Librarian in the School System. There are still quite a few vacancies on this Board. the Board has ideas but without a quorum it is hard to transact business.   The Staff Liaison is now Charmaine Eccles replacing Leslie Carhart.
