Crime and Public Safety Committee Meeting
Minutes
April 16, 2008
Fort Lauderdale City Hall Break Room 8th Floor
I. Introduction – Present were Ron Centamore, Ray Dettman, Ted Fling, Elizabeth Hays (minutes), Dave Parker, Joanne Smith (5:40), Dennis Ulmer (Vice Chair). Guest: Mike Ramos.
Meeting called to order at 5:35pm
II. Minutes of March 19, 2008 (attachment A) were approved as circulated.
III. Police Dept Report – none Hays was asked to get name of new liaison.
IV. Fire Department Report – none Battalion Chief Bacic was not asked to come to this meeting.
V. Old Business -
A. Committee Goals and Objectives – Betty Hays handed out copy of Crime Committee Goals last revised September, 2007 (attachment B).
B. Other – none
VI. New Business
A. Generate more committee membership – no discussion
B. Council Goals Discussion – Betty Hays handed out copy of Crime/Police/
Public Safety Goals from the Council (attachment C). The ten goals on the Council list were discussed and grouped into five groups which were then distributed to committee volunteers to work on for report at next meeting. The groupings and assigned person are: Group A – Lack of officers on the street, too much overtime, need to reduce response time – Ray Dettman; Group B – More training of new officers, dispatch and other personnel, need to improve dispatch – Joanne Smith; Group C – need to find ways to retain existing officers and encourage more new recruits, need to provide more incentives for officers to remain in the city – Dennis Ulmer; Group D – address the increase in prostituition and drug dealing throughout the City, address the increase in burglary and violent crime – Ted Fling; Group E need to consider adding a new zone that addresses downtown separately from other zones – Ron Centamore.VII.
VII. Announcements – Joanne Smith mentioned upcoming CERT disaster meeting.
