Education Advisory Board Meeting - June 2008

The meeting was held at the Old Dillard Museum as a part of trying to see other school related functons. It was also a part of their Juneteenth Quest for Independence in the Americas. They served delicious food & we were entertained by the Lauderhill Steel Pan Ensemble & a very dramatic poetry reading by Idya Harris. Derek Davis the curator welcomed us to their Museum We did not have a quorum but it was an interesting meeting.BCPS Liaison Charles Webster arranged a meeting room for us.  School Board Chair Robin Bartleman met with us & she always has interesting ifo to share.  She is quite concerned about Referendum 5,7&9. The school system has already lost 60 milion & with the increase by FPL that is another million. She says #9 will create more vouchers to be given to children in schools that are below the norm. The school Board is trying to not have any teacher lay offs.
An update on Sunland School is they are having some window & door repairs & replacements over the Summer.
Fort Lauderdal Centennial Celebration- Mr Webster discussed the possiblility of having some contests in the schoos. Dr. Hays suggested maybe we could get some donations from Business for prizes. That will be discussed at a later date.
Citizens Concerne about our Children- since thre are quite a few Board members now who do not know or understand the CCC,Dr Hays is to ask Mary Fertig, a former Board memer & one of the originators of the CCC to attend the meting on Aug 21 if possible. There is a power point avaliable that Leslie Carhart had. Charmaine Eccles will look into that.
On Sept. 18 there is to be a Smart School initiative with a Green Initiative. More will be given later.
There will be no meeting in July
