Crime Committee Minutes - June 18, 2008 Print E-mail

The Council of Fort Lauderdale Civic Associations, Inc.
Crime & Public Safety Committee Meeting
Minutes --June 18, 2008
City Hall Break Room, 8th Floor, Fort Lauderdale City Hall,
100 N. Andrews Avenue
Present: Ron Centamore, Ray Dettman, Ted Fling, Elizabeth Hays (minutes), Dennis Ulmer:  Guest:  Richard Mancuso
Call to order/Self Introductions – Elizabeth Hays, as Acting Chair, called the meeting to order at 5:30pm.  Everyone in attendance knew the others in attendance.  Those in attendance signed in (Attachment A)
Approval of Minutes – Minutes (Attachment B) of April 16, 2008 approved as circulated and distributed.
Unfinished Business:
1. Discussion of overview of Council Goals related to Crime and Public Safety, reports of Committee Member Goal assignments and reaction to Police Chief Adderley’s Council appearance and answers to our questions.   Group A (Lack of officers on streets, too much overtime, need to reduce response time);  Ray Dettman  reported he had contacted Major Harrington and had spoken to Captain Victor London and had no response before Chief (Roberts)/Adderley spoke to Council.  Ray and Dennis will plan a meeting with Adderley.   Group B (More training of new officers, dispatch and other personnel, need to improve dispatch); Joanne Smith was absent, thus no report.  Group C (need to find ways to retain existing officers and encourage new recruits to join, need to provide more incentives for officers to remain in city; Dennis Ulmer spoke to Chief Adderley, no current obligation to stay year or two years if trained at our academy.  Group D (address the increase in prostitution and drug dealing throughout the City, address the increase in burglary and violent crime); Ted Fling has had some discussion with Chief Adderley before he became chief, he will follow up again.  Group E (need to consider a new zone that addresses downtown separately from other zones); Ron Centamore spoke to David Hebert and obtained nothing positive to this suggestion.  He will speak to Adderley further on this issue.  In regards to Chief Adderley’s response to Council members’ questions, it was generally felt that little new was learned.
2. Three previous members were removed from membership list due to lack of attendance and lack of response to emails regarding continued membership (Attachment C).  Another previous member had previously requested removal from members list and this was also done.  New current membership list will be distributed at next meeting.
New Business:
1. Election of Committee Chair – since no one present was interested in the position, Elizabeth Hays agreed, reluctantly, to take this on for six months.  She also insisted that Dennis Ulmer remain as Vice Chair and he make the arrangements for meeting places.  Dennis agreed.  Members approved.  Chair Hays indicated she will again ask for volunteers to serve on the committee.
2. It was suggested that the Public Safety Committee/Council consider hosting a Town Hall meeting on Public Safety.
Adjournment: - Meeting adjourned at 5:18pm      Next meeting July 16 at 5:30pm

Respectfully submitted
Elizabeth Hays       crimemin-June08
