Education Advisory Board Report - October 16, 2008 Print E-mail

The EAB met on Oct. 16th & had a quorum this time so Business could be transpired. A new member was introduced, Jacqueline Ackerina who works with the School Board.
Southside School- The principal had called to say that good things are happening even though they are not publicized. Mr. Hamilton, the head of the SAC informed they had a large crowd of Parents at the meeting. Southside will be restored as a Community Center & the ribbon cutting will be in Jan.
Arthur Ashe-Mr. Luciano advised that the Magnet program awarded last year had 100 students from third through 8th grade. We were surprised about this & have  assumed they are combining the adjoining  elementary school.
Jonda Joseph, the City Clerk met with us to discuss an important City issue which is on the ballot on Nov 4th. She explained the item which is an addition to the City Charter. She advised there would no additional costs involved in this issue only to clarify a practice which is already in practice.
CCC Project- The Diversity Committee is looking for new members. The next meeting is Nov.6th. They meet the first Thursday of each month.
Broward County School District- Charles Webster- Blanche Ely High School is to host the Million Father Dinner for Dads.This is a continuation of the 28,000 Fathers who marched the first day of school. It is important for Dad's to "just be there" sometime at home & at school. More than 350 Dad's are expected. The purpose is to promote the engagement of Dad's with their children in all areas.
It was noted that the President  of the National PTA is a man.
The Legislature is reforming Bright Futures Scholarship programs. It is felt too many students who do not need this program are taking advantage. All State Agencies are taking at least a 10% cut for the coming year.
Dr. Hays report- She advised that she did attend Leola McCoy's funeral that was attended by many.
It is National School Lunch week.
Stranahan high School received Best High Schools Award.
Goals & Objectives
Mentoring is to become the First Goal-Mentoring can come from all areas, high school students, Business near by & possibly the Chamber of Commerce.
Second Goal - Partnerships- Check schools that do not have partnerships & business that will donate incentive awards.
Third Goal- One-on-One Reading Program recommend that City staff as well as Police & Firefighters help with this program which can be very rewarding. It was also mentioned that retired police & firefighters might be a source for this.
Fourth Goal - The 3 schools the EAB had worked with should continue & find out what we can do for them. We need to focus on these 3 if so needed & not take on any others.
There was a discussion as to how well the Free Pre K is working with some of the institutions. Further discussions will take place on this subject.
There will be a Magnet Showcase on  Dec. 3rd from 5-9 at the Convention Center. This is for Parents & students to attend a free showcase to shop for a Magnet program for the next year.
The next meeting will be Nov. 20th & there will be on meeting in December.
