The Education Advisor Board met on Nov. 20th again without a quorum. The meeting was quite interesting however.
Ms. Claudia Munroe Director of Design & Services Management spoke on the Green Initiative of the Broward County School Board. They are looking at these initiatives & designs for attainability. There are several rating systems that concern if a building is considered green. To receive certification can be costly. The staff of 12 must take a course and an exam to be qualified. She says it is very difficult. There are things which can be done that are not too expensive such as solar panels, conservation of water in the bath rooms & lighting in the parking lots. Atlantic Vocational Tech is the first school to be qualified and Stranahan will be the first High school. It is important to let students know what they can do and make them aware of what can be done in the future. The School Board does have Partnerships in their initiatives such as Broward Beautiful & Water Management.
Principal Deborah Owens from Stranahan High spoke next to let us know how the plans are progressing for the New Stranahan. Principal Owens is a very proud Principal of what she is trying to accomplish & what she is doing. The school was opened in 1953 first an elementary & then a Jr. High & in 1959 had its first graduating class as a Sr. High. This year was a reunion of that class with a large number attending. The school will be built on another part of the property & the old buildings will be torn down as the new ones are completed.
The pool has been redone & they are working on a relationship with the Neighborhood to have swimming lessons & use by the residents.
This school is made up of 4 Academies with students specializing in various subjects. The school has won many honors but still is considered a D school from its FCAT scores. She believes that the FCAT is based on Critical Thinking & it does help to prepare students for SAT exams.
This school & the Neighborhood have long had problems with lighting on the athletic field but the Principal believes by flipping the school campus some of the problems will go away. The Contractor is assigned & their staff are busy at work. Principal Owens has assigned a group of students to look into getting the name of the street changed to Dragon Lane. Completition should be 2111. Good luck to the School.
Sunland Park School Laura Clark reported that she has been in touch with the school as well as with Police & Fire staff for some time for volunteers at the school.
Arthur Ashe School Ms. Ackerina also offered to check with this school as to how we could help. Someone from the School will be asked to attend a meeting in Jan. or Feb.
Lauderdale Manors has also been contacted for their needs.
John Quinton Project Director from the Student Advisory Council spoke on the student run committee who work on items concerning the community. The Group is called the Teen Alliance Coalition & recently held a work shop at the Mizell Center. Their purpose is for a safe & healthy county, no anti social behavior and eliminate substance abuse. John says there vision is It's Not About Me & Heart for Youth.
Each one at the workshop was given homework, they should stop at convenience stores near schools & see what drug paraphnalia, single cigars & single alcohol containers are being sold. The Group believe if they can stop these sales at stores near schools they can improve the health & anti social behavior of the youth. A very interesting project & a very dedicated young man.
Charles Webster,Broward Count Schools announced that Maureen Dinnen had been named new Chair of the School Board.
Lu Deaner announced that the Southside School Ribbon Cutting would be on Jan 10th from 10:00 AM-2:30 PM. The CVC will also be assisting at this affair.
