Sewer Report
June, 2005

By The Sewer Queen
Aka Elizabeth Hays

Those of us living in Southwest Fort Lauderdale are “enjoying” the presence of the Waterworks project in our neighborhoods.  So far, the 27th Avenue Force Main work is done.  The new water pipe from Peele-Dixie has been completed in Flamingo Park and River Run and is now being laid in Sunset.  Sewer work is beginning in Oak River and the southern parts of River Run and Riverland Road is closed below 18th Street.  So far Waterworks and Mario Diaz have been very proactive in informing us of what is going on and responding to neighborhood complaints.  As an example, sign changes were made the next day after our meeting on June 7th.  These were helpful in keeping lost souls out of the neighborhood due to closing of Riverland Road.  We may have a long hot summer to go but so far so good.

I am sorry to say that things are not going so well in Lauderdale Manors phase II.  At Commissioners Moore’s May District III meeting, Paul Bohlander explained the difficulty they are having with Astaldi on phase II and steps the City has to make to remove Astaldi from the project and to find a new contractor to take over process.  The Waterworks people seem to be trying to improve the situation in Lauderdale Manors but it continues to fester and cause stress in that neighborhood.  If any other neighborhoods are experiencing difficulties or are experiencing successes with their sewer, water main, force main projects, let me know and I will incorporate them into my next Council report.

Finally, the April and May, I participated with Reed Markee from Riverside Park as citizen members of the Consultant Selection and Negotiation Committee for “Engineering Testing Laboratory Services” for the City.  The selected company will do a variety of testing required by the Waterworks and other City construction projects.  Eight companies submitted proposals and five companies were short-listed to come back and give 15minute presentations with time for questions and answers.  On May 20th, the presentations were heard and, after final deliberation, the committee voted to recommend Nodarse and Williams as the top two companies to recommend for approval by the City Commission.  Cost negotiations are in process and recommendation should be presented to Commission in July.
