The School Board of Broward County has been sponsoring several educational summits through out the County.  Benjamin Williams, District 5 School Board Member, will convene his summit on Monday, October 17th.  The summit will be held from 6-8:30pm at Dillard High School, 2501 NW 11th Street, Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Please call the school at 754-322-0800 for further directions.  For more information, contact Maggie Zalamea at 754-321-2190.  You do not have to live in District 5 in order to attend and participate in this summit.  Please try to attend or have a representative from your neighborhood attend.  Your input to the School Board through these summits is very important.

Educational Advisory Board

The board did not meet in July.  At the August meeting, significant time was spent on the issue of school readiness which culminated in a request that Readiness subcommittee bring the criteria used by the National Association for the Education of Young Children for readiness indicators or measures.  Brian Dassler was reelected Co Chair of board but Lu Deaner resigned as Co Chair.  Pam Brown was elected co chair.  Both Brian and Pam are now on the County Diversity Committee and discussed some of their frustration regarding recent events and controversy regarding that committee.  Pam did indicate that she has gotten Suniland elementary of the Diversity visitation list for this year.

The September meeting focused on planning for the next year.  The NAEYC position statement on School Readiness was distributed to all members.  Also the board decided to adopt two or three schools in the City to focus efforts to help these schools become more successful.  Final decision of the schools will occur at October meeting.  Next EAB meeting is scheduled for October 20th.

Parks and Recreation Board

At the July meeting, the recreational program of the month was David Deal Day, always a big event for Parks and Rec.  Terry Rynard presented the Departmental Budget for the upcoming year.  She also gave an update on the Air and Sea Show and the agreement expected to go to Commission in September.  The board does not meet in August and the September meeting was cancelled due to rescheduling of September Commission meeting to fourth Wednesday of month.  Next meeting is scheduled to be October 26th.
